Our campus has recently seen an influx of the mysterious skateboard-like Segway called the IO Hawk, most notably in the hands of our football players but not limited to them exclusively. Imagine what grandparents must think of us able bodied youth using these devilish devices. I can hear my own “If we aren’t careful, the robots are going to control us one day”; all right Grandpa. But seriously though, who could have predicted that in less than a year since their development in L.A. IO Hawk would become a global company.
This guy, John Soibatian, designed these boards and since then there have been tens of off shoots and knock offs of his design. And hey, I don’t really blame these copycat companies, hell, it’s a pretty radical idea if nothing else. So I did some more research and come to find out, Mr. Soibatian sells these contraptions for just shy of $2,000! I mean they are cool and I would definitely take one for a test drive, just fool around on the IO Hawk for an hour or two, but I am not going to spend $2,000 on a toy! Competitors, rationally, sell boards for less money, as low as about $600
$2,000 and you could be the next owner of an IO Hawk, joining a global population from L.A. to China (where they are probably made, what isn’t?). Now onto Mr. Soibatian; He graduated from UCLA, so that’s aight, He lives in one of the nicest climates in the world, that’s trill, and now he is on his way to being an American business mogul. This guy is a legend, the youngest entrepreneur reppin, if you think about it. He created the IO Hawk from a pretty basic idea, getting from point a to point b without having to walk. It first came on the market in February of this year in L.A., where apparently multitudes ride these skateboards to and fro downtown. Within the year we see them on our very campus, which is across the country from where it was introduced. The IO Hawk went viral, in part, because celebrities would appear in videos and on television with the board, in effect, doing free advertising for Mr. Soibatian.
As you can imagine, there is a strong European market for the IO Hawk and, based on the company’s website, they are in the process of dramatically increasing production and expediting the product oversees. Not to mention this will increase revenue for Mr. Soibatian as the average cost will decrease as quantity produced increases. Finally as Mr. Soibatian comes into his millions of dollars, he will have the resources and time to sue companies that have produced look a like IO Hawks, eliminating them from the competition. What a time to be a lawyer.
Who knows if the IO Hawk is here to stay, if it dies oh my god it was a legend. All I know is I don’t have deep enough pockets, but if anyone on the football team is willing to share, just let me know. And as a quick aside, if the IO Hawk would have a college presence, it would be at our school… More kudos to us though; I love that kids ride these around like savages. I wish I had one. And finally, invest in this company if it ever as an IPO. I don’t actually think the IO Hawk is a long term trend, but it is going to grow very very quickly. Hopefully Mr. Soibatian gets a high evaluation and in the merger or buyout that eventually happens, we, the shareholders, benefit handsomely. Jordan Belfort would!
